From Bee Pioneer to Frontier: The Story of the Startup Amazon Bought

The startup and the Pioneer

Bee was co-founded and led by CEO Maria de Lourdes Zollo. Its first product, the Bee Pioneer, was a small, Fitbit-like module that slotted into a wristband or clip, priced at $49.99. One press started a recording session; press-and-hold let you ask the assistant or leave a voice note. It came with a black band, a yellow band and a clip, quoted seven days of battery, charged over USB-C and had two noise-filtering microphones — but no water resistance.

The company raised a modest amount of venture money; TechCrunch reported about $7 million in 2024.

Amazon steps in

On 22 July 2025 Zollo announced on LinkedIn that Bee was joining Amazon, and an Amazon spokesperson confirmed it. The price was not disclosed. (You may see a $500 million figure online; we found no credible source for it.) Bee employees received offers to join Amazon.

The deal made sense for Amazon: it had spent a decade building Alexa as a voice assistant you talk to, and Bee offered something different — an AI that learns from the conversations you have with other people.

Building trust first

Before announcing hardware, Bee published its Private Compute design on 24 September 2026: audio deleted after processing, transcripts encrypted with device-held keys, processing inside AWS Nitro enclaves. Launching the privacy story before the product was a clear choice. See Bee Private Compute explained.

Frontier and Eclipse

On 15 October 2026 Amazon launched Bee Frontier ($74.99) and Bee Eclipse ($99.99), plus Bee Pro at $11.99 a month. Frontier keeps the Pioneer's core idea — module, band, clip, one week of battery — and adds IP67, a new design and better integration with Amazon services. The Pioneer is no longer sold.

What Pioneer owners get

Existing Pioneer owners keep their current features for free, according to Engadget. They do not get Frontier's water resistance or the Eclipse's call features without buying new hardware.
